Samba music is always associated with merry carnival parades. Now, you don¡¦t have to travel far to be part of a carnival parade, you can even make your own stunning costume and be part of a community-driven event!

These interesting parades are put together by the Dream Community and Jane Goodall Institute Taiwan, and have taken place in Taitung¡¦s Kanding Elemetary School, Pingtung¡¦s Wutan Elementary School, and Taipei¡¦s Pingxi Elementary School on May 19, May 26 and June 23 respectively.

The objective of the events is to promote environmental awareness through the collaboration of foreign artists, local students and teachers, and communities. Workshops are conducted for 2 to 3 weeks, getting everyone ready for a parade filled with fun and meanings.

The students at Kanding and Wutan were treated to a special course of samba drum learning. The indigenous children picked up the rhythm in an amazing short time, and were able to parade the streets of their communities complete with chimps, frogs, fire dancers and stilt walkers.

The students at Pingxi concentrated on making props and costumes for their parade. Mini-trains, fruit-laden trees, menacing bugs, and the ubiquitous chimps made their way into the hearts of the crowds. The parade ended with an exciting fire dance in the evening, and 20 over sky lanterns were flown!

In all events, children and adults alike took great interest in the parades, and have learned that raising environmental awareness, being creative, and having fun can all be done together!
