The Earth
Savers Club at Colegio International in EL Salvador
initiated a school-wide program to recycle paper,
plastic and aluminum. The group educated fellow students
about the importance of recycling by performing small
drama skits; they also sponsored a recycled-boat race.
They held bake sales to buy the recycling bins for
the plastic and aluminum. Once a week the Earth Savers,
with special representatives from each elementary
grade, recycle the materials. The group is in their
second year with this project; their goal for the
2005-2006 school years is to continue educating the
students about the importance of recycling.

The Toledo
ZOOTeens helped perform a brush pile burn at the Oak
Openings Metropark. During the summer months, this
group monitors the growth of lupine plants and removes
invasive plant species from this park. Two large piles
of brush, each over 6 feet tall, were burned in order
to create a corridor for native wildlife, including
the federally endangered Karner blue butterfly.

Roots
& Shoots at Five Rivers in New York mapped the
locations of phragmites, an invasive grass, on the
ground of the Five Rivers Environmental Education
Center. The Center's staff is using the group's map
to determine where the grass is encroaching on native
plant habitats and where the removal efforts should
be focused. R&S members plan to devote at least
two more days in the coming months to removing the
phragmites.
