美國五河小組-
剷除外來種植物行動 |

在第二期的電子報中我們有報導過美國紐約五河（Five
Rivers）根與芽小組在五河環境教育中心裡，標示出此地區外來入侵蘆葦植物生長的位置，此中心的員工們並利用這些資料判定出哪些地點的原生植物棲地被侵占了，以及有哪些地方需要進行重點式清除的工作。2006年6月此小組的聚會中，再度的討論起這個議題，他們也造訪了此外來種問題最嚴重的地區，為了避免問題擴散，減少了原生種提供給野生動物棲地與食物的機會，因此他們在這些外來蘆葦成熟前，便將它們剷除，大人小孩們都相當有效率的一同參與這個剷除行動。

期間,孩子們也在一旁玩起了「叢林捉迷藏」遊戲：扮演土狼的小朋友必須背對其他扮演小兔子的同伴，小兔子們則必須找個地方躲起來，當土狼轉過身後，必須一一尋找這些小兔子藏在哪裡，被找到的小朋友則必須加入土狼的行列，進行下一回合，沒被找到的，則繼續在土狼附近尋找另一個藏身處；這個遊戲則教導了孩子野生動物的藏身技巧：偽裝、靜止不動、低身躲藏以及維持輕靜無聲。孩子們都相當的喜愛這個遊戲，樂在其中。
At
our June 10th meeting, we revisited the concept of invasive
species and returned to one of the largest phragmites
sites we mapped last November. To prevent this patch
from spreading further and outcompeting cattails, which
provide better wildlife habitat and food, we cut down
all the new spring growth before it had a chance to
go to seed. The kids and adults worked well and quickly
together, and you can see the result, below:
Then
we played the "thicket game." One "coyote"
turned around while the "rabbits" hid, and
when she turned around she pointed out all the rabbits
she could see. These rabbits joined her for the next
round, and the rabbits which hadn't been spotted found
new hiding spots closer to the coyotes. This gave us
a chance to learn effective wildlife hiding methods-
camouflage, holding still, keeping low, staying quiet,
etc. The kids enjoyed this so much that they played
until shortly after our meeting time was over at noon.
