They did
some research and discovered that two area school
districts, combined, use about 4,000 polystyrene trays
per day¡Xwhich makes for 960,000 per year! They also
learned that polystyrene takes a very long time to
decompose, meaning that it can hang around in landfills
for years and years.

The group members set goals for themselves:
to reduce their schools¡¦ contribution to landfills,
to find trays made out of recyclable material such
as cardboard and to explore the possibility of compostable
trays.

We
are the Dewey Elementary School Roots & Shoots
environmental group. Our goal is to make a positive
difference in our world. We have a concern about the
environmental harm adult decision-makers are causing
by using [polystyrene] trays in our . . . school lunch
program.

School
officials and workers listened to the group's ideas
but were concerned about the additional cost and weight
of cardboard trays.

The Peaceweavers
have not given up though. They plan to meet with the
superintendent and other school officials to find
a solution that works for their school and for the
environment.
