Each year
on June 5, thousands of people around the world take
part in World Environment Day (WED).
Roots & Shoots members are among the thousands.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly
in 1972, World Environment Day stimulates worldwide
awareness of the environment, enhancing political
attention and action.
This year, Roots & Shoots-Nepal got involved by
creating a plant nursery for rare and endangered plant
species. The group¡¦s goal is to grow the plants in
the nursery and then replant them in the wild.
With space provided by the School of Environmental
Management and Sustainable Development (SchEMS) (affiliated
with Pokhara University) in Kathmandu, R&S-Nepal
held an inaugural ceremony for their plant nursery.
In his opening speech, Dr. Anand Raj Joshi, the school's
Academic Director, expressed his appreciation for
the R&S group¡¦s work and announced the school¡¦s
commitment to maintaining the nursery and helping
it expand.
After the ceremony, R&S-Nepal organized a bicycle
rally, in which participants rode from Tin Kune to
Durbar Square¡Xa UNESCO (United Nations Educational,
Scientific, CulturalOrganization) World Heritage Site¡Xencouraging
people to "Use Bicycles for Short Distances."
Roots & Shoots members in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
also took the opportunity to celebrate WED. Members
and alumni of Roots & Shoots-Tanzania gathered
on June 2 to have a beach cleanup.
The group picked up plastic bottles, old shoes and
discarded polystyrene, hauling 90 bags of trash off
the beach¡Xa total of 1.4 tons of trash!
After the cleanup, members learned about new ways
to re-use material. Representatives from Small Industries
Development Organization (SIDO) and Tanzania Industrial
Research and Development Organization (TIRDO) showed
them bags made from used phone cards, toys made from
old tires and jewelry made from coconut shells. There
were quizzes and crafts and an essay contest.
Finally, the group held an educational poster fair
near the Roots & Shoots office in Mikocheni. The
R&S group's theme this year is "Feed your
mind with Positivity, heal the world with Creativity!"
so members showed their creative flare through vibrant
illustrated posters, displaying information about
the environment, erosion and threatened coral reefs.
With support from Celtel and the U.S. Embassy, the
group was also able to create T-shirts commemorating
the event.
If you and your Roots & Shoots group celebrated
World Environment Day, register your project with
WED, and be sure to submit a Roots & Shoots Project
Report too!
