Ideas, experiences and smiles were just a few of the things that were shared when college Roots & Shoots members from the U.S. visited fellow members in China last month.

The trip was part of a new exchange program, through which Roots & Shoots student members hope to bypass cultural barriers to connect with other individuals who share a respect for the environment, animals and the human community.

Volunteers in Shanghai and Beijing worked diligently to prepare a schedule full of activities for us. We marveled at the Great Wall of China, the glorious lights of Shanghai's Bund, the sheer size of Tiananmen Square and the beauty of the area¡¦s temples and gardens.

Although the sightseeing was breathtaking, the most fulfilling experiences came from our interactions with the Chinese students.

At a Shanghai high school, we helped water an exquisite organic garden and were given eggplants and peppers to enjoy. In Beijing, we joined together with the Chinese students to celebrate Water Celebration Day and looked at student-made displays on how to reduce water usage.

Later, we all worked together, stuffing cardboard tubes with straw, sunflower seeds and nuts to create chimpanzee enrichment toys for the Shanghai Zoo.

During our tour of the Shanghai Zoo, we paid close attention to the zoo's treatment of its animals and discussed ways the zoo could provide healthier environments for the animals. We met several dedicated individuals at the zoo who are trying to help the animals little by little with added enrichment and updated enclosures.

We came away from the exchange experience feeling energized, with a new appreciation for the sharing of culture and experience that is necessary to create a caring global community.

We expected overwhelming differences. We discovered that people everywhere share the same values, hopes and determination to make the world a better place.
