Every type of living environment offers a unique opportunity for Roots & Shoots projects. Planning a project in an urban setting may seem difficult, but don't let your location deter you. Use the following project ideas, created specifically with a cityscape in mind, to help your group participate in projects that help people, animals and environment.

Clean up a park or roadside
While beach and river cleanups are very popular activities for people outside of cities, there are plenty of urban areas that could benefit from a cleanup too. Roadsides, green areas and cemeteries are just a few examples. During your cleanup, make sure to separate recyclable materials from non-recyclable materials. Decide ahead of time on an area that you want to clean (e.g. five miles of road), a length of time you want to work or the number of trash bags you want to fill.

Volunteer at an animal shelter
Animal shelters are often in need of volunteers to walk dogs, play with cats or help with office duties. Visit the Humane Society of the United States to find a shelter in your community. Your group could also promote spay and neuter awareness in your community by creating signs, handing out literature or talking to the public.

Host a movie screening
Raise awareness about an issue by hosting a movie screening. Consider showing a film about Dr. Jane such as Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees or a documentary, such as Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth. Publicize the event and consider serving vegetarian food. Afterward, hold a discussion about the movie's topic and encourage viewers to take action. You might decide to start a conversation about the film on the Roots & Shoots Discussion Boards.

Be a "Fairy Godmother"
Do you have a used prom dress that sits in your closet? The Fairy Godmother Project of Massachusetts collects new or gently worn formal dresses and accessories to donate to financially disadvantaged students in the state so they can attend formal events in style. If you do not live in Massachusetts, there are similar projects all around the country. Can't find one in your community? Your Roots & Shoots group could start one!

Buy nothing
Challenge yourself to reduce, reuse and recycle by going an entire day without purchasing anything. Take the "Buy Nothing Day" challenge and pledge to refrain from making any purchases for an entire day. The goal is to become aware of how much money you spend in a day and how you could reduce your consumption. If you're feeling adventurous, try buying nothing for a week, a month or even a whole year!

Be kind to a stranger
Tempers can run short in a big city, where streets are crowded and lines are long. Make an effort to perform a random act of kindness. Help someone carry groceries, hold an elevator door, give directions or let someone go ahead of you in line. At your next meeting, share your experience with your group members. Consider pledging to perform a random act of kindness every week.
